Kids Grow With Me Pyjama Sewing Pattern

I discovered the Kids Grow With Me Pyjama Pattern form Ellie and Mac and was delighted to find that it was FREE. A whole, entire pyjama and nightgown sewing pattern for free, for anyone, just free to download. I couldn’t quite believe it. I know a lot of sewing pattern companies give away free patterns, usually for accessories or maybe a limited size range or a very simple pattern. But Ellie and Mac’s Kids Grow With Me Pyjama Pattern isn’t one of those. It’s a complete sewing pattern.

Both the nightgown and matching pyjama sewing patterns are included. So I can sew my Little Miss a matching nightgown. The sizes are form 6 months to 14 years so I’ll get plenty of years of use out of this pattern. There’s different options for the front bodice too. There’s a bit of colour blocking so it’s great for using up scraps of fabric.

But the best feature, the one that really made my crafty heart sing is the extendable cuffs. They make these pyjamas and nightgown “Grow With Me”. How this works is that kid’s tend to grow taller much, much faster than they grow wider. So their clothes tend to be too short for them long before they are too tight. By extending the cuffs to accommodate that extra growth you can get quite literally years of extra wear out of a garment with a Grow With Me Feature.

If I really had to nit pick a fault or negative comment about this pattern it would be the lack of a shorts and short sleeve options. But that is such a moany thing to say about a FREE pattern. And besides it’s really not hard to cut off the pants and cuffs to hack the sewing pattern into shorts and short sleeved versions.

Digital Sewing Patterns

Digital sewing patterns are fantastic for kids clothes because you just print the size you want, no tracing or messing about trying to preserve the larger sizes of the pattern for using as your child grows.

They generally come with loads of different options and a wider size range than traditional paper sewing patterns. Most of the digital sewing patterns I own go all the way up to the teenage years.

Sewing Fabric

I’m sewing with this gorgeous stretch Lycra fabric that I picked up in my local fabric shop’s closing down sale. Seriously people, if you want your local craft shops to survive get in there and spend your money with them. Both my local fabric and yarn shops have closed. And calling them local was a stretch to start with as they were both a 45 minute drive away. I will sorely miss my annual pilgrimage to splurge my savings on softness.

Now I get most of my fabric from Minerva Crafts. They have a great selection and very reasonable prices.

Sewing Thread

I use Coats Moon Thread for all of my sewing projects. It’s a fantastic all rounder great for machine sewing, hand sewing, quilting and top stitching. Best of all it’s fantastic value. I use it for literally everything!

I buy it in bulk and put the surplus in my Etsy shop. There’s loads of colours to choose from.

Sewing Up Kids Grow With Me Pyjamas

This is my first sew with a sewing pattern from Ellie and Mac. I was really impressed with how detailed the instructions were. They were super easy to follow, I’ve made quite a lot of elasticated pants and shirts by now and the cuff construction is second nature but I think even had I been completely new to this style of sewing pattern I’m sure I would have been fine.

I’m sewing these Pyjamas for my Little Dude so I opted for the plain colour blocked front. There is a ruffle option which is very cute but decidedly girly.

I went for the Grow With Me cuffs of course. Twice as much wear out of one garment – yes please.

How To Sew an Elasticated Channel

Elasticated channels such as on a waistline or sleeve cuff are easy to sew and comfortable to wear. They are great for sewing children’s clothes because you can stitch a size bigger than the child needs and the elasticated channel will hold the garment in place comfortably as the child grows.

Follow these simple steps to sewing your own elasticated channels.

I followed the instructions pretty much as written, with only one tiny little alteration. When I’m sewing my cuff pieces together I use a straight stitch instead of a stretch stitch on my sewing machine. Then I press the seam open. The instructions from Ellie and Mac show this seam stitched on an overlocker and pressed to one side as this seam can’t be pressed flat if sewn with an overlock stitch. Using a straight stitch and pressing the seam flat allowing the cuff to lie a little flatter and significantly reduces the bulk in the cuff seam. It’s a tiny little thing that takes only a few second but makes a significant difference the finished garment.
