Free Rachel Skirt Sewing Pattern – Quick and Easy Sew

Learn how to sew this super simple girls skirt with a FREE sewing pattern from Ellie and Mac. This is a super easy gathered skirt which is perfect for beginners. It can be sewn with scraps of fabric for a fun colour blocked effect. This is a digital sewing pattern but don’t worry if you’ve never used one before I’ll show you how to download and print it. I’m also including super detailed instructions on how to gather your skirt. So even if you’ve never sewn before you can sew this Rachel skirt.

Rachel Skirt Sewing Pattern from Ellie and Mac

The Rachel form Ellie and Mac is a fantastic FREE skirt sewing pattern. It’s a super easy gathered skirt which is perfect for beginners. But what I really love about this sewing pattern is that it’s made from three separate pieces of fabric so it’s brilliant for using up scraps leftover from other sewing projects.

Digital Sewing Patterns

Digital sewing patterns are fantastic for kids clothes because you just print the size you want, no tracing or messing about trying to preserve the larger sizes of the pattern for using as your child grows.

They generally come with loads of different options and a wider size range than traditional paper sewing patterns. Most of the digital sewing patterns I own go all the way up to the teenage years.

Sewing Fabric

I had a length of lovely light weight woven floral print fabric left over from some cushions I made for my dining chairs. It was a long but narrow length of fabric, not really wide enough to do much with. I immediately thought of the Rachel pattern and it just happened to be the perfect size.

I love it when scraps inspire new projects like this.

I combined my floral scrap with some lovely shimmery challis that was in my stash.

I get most of my fabric from Minerva Crafts. They have a great selection and very reasonable prices.

Sewing Thread

I use Coats Moon Thread for all of my sewing projects. It’s a fantastic all rounder great for machine sewing, hand sewing, quilting and top stitching. Best of all it’s fantastic value. I use it for literally everything!

I buy it in bulk and put the surplus in my Etsy shop. There’s loads of colours to choose from.

I recommend the grey shades. They don’t show up on most fabrics so you’ll have less need to change your thread between projects. It also saves you money because you can get grey threads in bigger bulk at a cheaper price.

Sewing Notions

This is a super easy skirt sewing pattern, there’s just one thing needed, elastic for the waist band.

I’ve used 3/4 inch wide elastic as recommended in the pattern instructions.

Sewing Techniques

This is a fantastic skirt sewing pattern for beginners because it doesn’t require a lot of techniques to sew it up.

The main part of the skirt does need to be gathered before being sewn onto the waist band. If you are new to sewing here is a step by step tutorial showing you how to gather fabric.
