This delicious apple sauce recipe is perfect for spooning over yoghurt and cereal. I keep plenty in the cupboard for when I’ve run out of fresh fruit so I can still have a tasty, healthy snack on hand.

Ingredients

  • Apples
  • Lemon Juice

There’s no need to pay attention to quantities with this recipe. More apples will of course make more apple sauce.

How To Cook Apple Sauce

Peel, core and chop the apples.

Add them to a large stainless steel pan with just enough water to stop them sticking to the pan.

Bring the apples to the boil.

Boil until the apples are nice and soft. How long this will take will depend on how many apples you have. I usually start them cooking while I finish peeling and chopping the rest. The last few cook down while I tidy and wipe down the kitchen.

Add a squirt of lemon juice. This increases the acidity of the apples to help preserve them. It doesn’t really matter how much lemon juice you add, I’d say I use about a tablespoon per kilo of apples.

For a sweeter apple sauce add some sugar. You really don’t need much, 25g is plenty for each kilo of apples. I have a sweet tooth but I always make my apple sauce without any sugar at all.

Pour the apple sauce mixture into clean jam jars. There is no need to sterilise the jam jars if you will be water bath canning them as the canning process will sterilise them effectively. Just make sure they are sparkly clean.

Add the lids. Fasten the lids so that they are “fingertip tight”. Just tighten the lids with the tips of your fingers, don’t put much force into it. This will allow the air to escape as the jars are heated. As the jars cool and contract this will pull the lid down and make a really tight seal to keep all the bugs out of your scrummy apple sauce.

Place the jars into a hot water bath canner at 100 degrees centigrade.

Boil for 20 minutes.

You can let the jars cool in the canner if you wish, I usually have a second batch ready to can so I remove mine with a jar lifter and set them on a tea towel to cool down overnight. It’s important not to put your boiling hot jars onto a cool surface as the sudden change in temperature may shatter the glass.

I do hope my apple sauce recipe has inspired you to have a go at making your own delicious apple sauce.
