How to Make a DIY Rope Basket [Step by Step Craft Tutorial]

Get organised in style with these practical rope baskets. They’re super easy to make and so much fun, I couldn’t stop making them!

Materials

You can use just about any rope. The thinner the rope is the longer it will take and the more accurately you will have to stitch so thicker rope is easier to work with. I went for some chunky natural rope that’s 9mm in diameter.

You’ll also need some sewing thread. I love Coats Moon Thread, it’s a good quality but affordable option that suits most projects.

And of course you’ll need a sewing machine. A good quality sewing machine is so worth the investment. If you’re on a tight budget look for a second hand sewing machine instead of choosing a cheaper one.

Making Your Rope Baskets

Start by setting the stitch settings on your sewing machine. The stitch length needs to be on the maximum.

And the stitch width needs to be set to the maximum too.

Getting started stitching is the tricky bit, once you’re past this it’s plain sailing. Fold the end of your rope back on itself and place this folded bit underneath the presser foot of your sewing machine.

Sew a couple of zig zag stitches. Then stop stitching and gently turn the rope so that you’re coiling it around the fold you started with.

Keep stitching and keep coiling, slow and steady is the name of the game until you get started.

You can keep going, coiling the rope round and round until you make a flat circle. Or you can gently pull your circle up towards the top of your sewing machine and continue stitching the next coil.

After stitching the first coil of the sides you can pull the basket up more sharply to make a steeper side.

You’ll need to hold the emerging basket in place as you stitch. Keep holding it up and try to keep the angle consistent.

When your basket has reached the size you want trim off the excess rope and keep on stitching until you get to the end of the rope.

Then reverse your stitches over the end of the rope to secure it.

Congratulations, you’ve made your very own rope basket, ready to beautifully contain your treasures. Once you start you won’t be able to stop! Have fun experimenting with different colours and sizes.
