I like to use up my leftover yarn by knitting matching accessories. This Free mittens knitting pattern is one of my go to knitting patterns because it includes all of my favorite yarn weights, DK, chunky, Aran and fingering. So no matter what my project is I can knit a matching pair of mittens and put that scrap yarn to good use.
Knitting Yarn
These mittens are knitted from Hayfields Baby Blossom Chunky yarn from Sirdar. It’s a nice chunky yarn that knits up nicely with no splitting. It washes pretty well too, I’ve had no problems with bobbling or anything like that. My Little Dude loves this yarn, it’s become his go to choice for his hand knitted hoodys.

I’ve finished knitting this lovely chunky hoody in this yarn. I’m knitting these mittens with the left over yarn – it’s a great way to use up the yarn that’s leftover from bigger projects.
Chunky Yarn Alternatives
Here are some other suitable chunky yarns that could be used instead. Although this FREE mittens knitting pattern can be knitted in just about any weight of yarn.
Knitting Tension
Baby Blossom Chunky knits up to a tension of 14 stitches x 19 rows to 10 cm / 4 inches.

Knitting Needles
I don’t get on with the magic loop technique so I’ve invested in a set of 4mm and 5mm double pointed needles. I’ve used 4mm for the cuffs and 5mm needles for the main part of the gloves.

Knitting Pattern
I’m on a mission to use up the yarn I alreday have before buying any new yarn so that means using up those leftover little bits after finishing larger knitting projects. I’m building up a stash of small knitted accessories that will co-ordinate perfectly with my larger projects or could be used as a gift in their own right.

This mittens pattern has quickly become one of my favourites. It’s The World’s Simplest Mittens from Tin Can Knits. The pattern is completely free and you can even download a printable pdf.
What makes this knitting pattern really, super handy is that it comes in a range of sizes from toddler to adult AND it also comes in a range of yarn weights. So no matter what project I need accessories for I can knit these super simple mittens with my leftover yarn.
