My Little Miss choose this sparkly teal yarn and a hoody pattern from Patons 3850 for her next hand knitted project.

Materials

This hoody is knitted from acrylic aran yarn from Armoni. My Little Miss made a beeline for this sparkly yarn as soon as she saw it. It falls short of my preferred quality of yarn but I don’t mind if it makes my little girl happy.

I used 5mm knitting needles for the main jacket knitting and 4mm knitting needles for the cuffs.

I picked some simple buttons from my inherited button stash.

Knitting Pattern

Little Miss picked out this hoody knitting pattern from Patons. I prefer the tweedy type aran that’s shown on the cover but Little Miss has her own sense of style.

The knitting pattern was pretty straightforward.

Garter stitch cuffs and stockinette stitch for the main body. I’m not a fan of garter stitch cuffs personally. I think I’m just more used to seeing rib knit cuffs and so anything else just looks a little bit wrong to me.

The pockets are a bit weird, clever but weird. The front of the hoody is knit in one piece with a small gap of stitches held on a stitch holder and cast back on again in the next row. The held stitches are then knitted in garter stitch to make a cuff for the pocket. The pocket lining is a separate piece of knitting that is sewn in place. I guess it looks neater from the front than a traditional patch pocket. But my pocket cuff kind of sags a bit. I must have stretched it somehow whilst sewing it in place. With hindsight I think a patch pocket would actually look neater.

The stitch pattern was challenging. Mostly because I usually knit in the evenings in poor light. It’s difficult to keep track of complicated stitch patterns until I’ve got them established. This pattern changes every 12 rows so I never really got the pattern established before the next change. It did add some interest to an otherwise plain garment that might have got boring without this feature. It also gives the hoody a bit of texture to elevate it above a plain old simple hoody.

The optional hood is a super cute touch that Little Miss loves.

So overall I was really happy with this pattern and I’ll definitely knit it again.

I specifically encouraged Little Miss to get this particular pattern because it includes a jumper option as well as the hoody. I was hoping I’d get the chance to knit both variations but it seems that both my kids prefer button up hoody style sweaters.

Next time I’ll make traditional patch pockets and I’ll try and steer Little Dude towards a softer aran yarn.

I do hope my Knitting project has inspired you to have a go at knitting your own kids clothes.
