Got scraps leftover from your latest dressmaking or quilting project? Make this cute little Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt for the Little Ones in your life. I’ve used fabric scraps from a dress and an old tablecloth to make my Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt.

What You Will Need to Sew Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt

Fabric

You can Sew Your Own Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt from just about any fabric that takes your fancy. Lighter weight fabrics or stretch fabrics are going to be more difficult to work with. I’d recommend using woven non-stretch fabric such quilting cotton or polycotton like I’ve used for my Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt.

Wadding / Batting

You can buy quilters wadding by the metre or in small packs.

I use a lovely quality cotton mix wadding for my patchwork quilts. It’s availible from my Etsy shop.

If you’re on a tight budget you can sew these Baby Doll Patchwork Quilts with wadding alternatives. An old fleece blanket or hoody is a good option. Any light weight fabric with plenty of “bounce” will do the job.

Contrasting Fabric

You’ll need a second colour of fabric in a similar weight to your patterned fabric. This will make the backing, contrast and also the quilt binding.

I’m using an old cotton tablecloth.

Thread

I love Coats Moon Thread. It’s cheap as chips and suitable for just about any sewing project. I’ve got lots of colours available in my Etsy shop.

You’ll also need basic sewing supplies like a needle and scissors. You could Sew Your Own Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt by hand but it will of course be much, much quicker to sew with a sewing machine.

You’ll also need some marking and cutting tools. I love my rotary cutter, mat and ruler.

How to Sew a Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt

Cut Out The Fabric

Start by cutting out the following pieces of fabric. Be as accurate as possible.

  • 8″ Squares of Fabric x 2
  • 3″ Squares of Fabric x 8
  • 3″ Squares of Contrast x 10
  • 2.5″ Wide Strips of Contrast (far Sashing)
  • 2.5″ Wide Strips of Contrast (for Binding)
  • 25″ Square Contrast (for Backing)
  • 25″ Square Wadding

How to Make the Binding

You can use shop bought binding if you wish but I like to make my own and this is how I do it.

You’ve cut lengths of fabric 2.5″ wide. The longer the lengths, the better.

Join the individual lengths to make one long continuous length of binding fabric.

Place the ends of the lengths of fabric right sides together at right angles. Pin them together.

Stitch across the right angle.

Press the two pieces flat with the excess fabric pressed in opposite directions, just like pressing a seam open.

Trim off the excess fabric.

Fold the length of binding in half wrong sides together and give it a good press.

I like to roll my binding around itself to keep it neat until I need it.

Patchwork the Baby Doll Quilt

Start by sewing the two nine patch squares.

Use a quarter inch seam allowance. I like to use a quarter inch foot on my sewing machine because it makes it really easy to keep to a consistent quart inch seam. Accuracy is crucial at this point.

Sew each 3″ square of fabric to the next one, right sides together.

Arrange your patchworking in the same way as you want it to be on your finished quilt.

Press the top row of squares in one direction and the second row in the opposite direction. Press the seams of the third row in the same direction as the top row. This will make it easier to match up the seams in your patchwork.

Sew the three rows together. Sew a length of sashing to the bottom of one set and the top of the other.

Sew the large 8″ square of fabric to the sashing. Press the seams to one side.

Sew another length of sashing in between the two pieces of patchwork you have sewn so far. Press the seams to one side.

How to Make a Quilt Sandwich

Make a quilt sandwich by layering the backing fabric right side down, then the wadding then the patchwork right side up on top. Pin the sandwich together using safety pins placed every few inches.

Quilt all the layer together. You can use any quilting pattern you like. I have just sewn a line of stitching a quarter of an inch on either side of each line of patchwork stitching.

Trim off the excess wadding and backing fabric to make your Baby Doll Quilt square.

How to Sew the Binding

Place the length of binding along an edge of the Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt on the right side. Hold it in place so that the raw edges of the binding and the raw edges of the cover are lined up.

Stitch along this edge. I use a quarter inch seam.

When you reach a corner of the Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt stop sewing a quarter of an inch before the corner.

Fold the binding back at a right angle so that it is lined up with the next side.

Then fold it back on itself along the next side of the quilted base.

Start stitching again a quarter of an inch from the corner along the next side.

Fold the binding to the wrong side of the Baby Doll Patchwork Quilt. Sew it in place.

You can stitch the back on the binding in place by machine but I find it easier to sew this by hand.
