How to Make Your Own Binding for Quilts

It’s easy to make your own binding for your patchwork sewing projects. You can use scraps of fabric leftover from your main project and the binding will perfectly match the rest of your fabrics.

Follow these easy steps to make your own binding for patchwork quilts.

What You Will Need to Make Your Own Binding

In addition to your fabric you will need marking and cutting tools. You could use tailors chalk and scissors but it it much, much quicker and more accurate to use a rotary cutter, mat and ruler.

You’ll also need pins and basic sewing supplies such as a needle, thread and scissors.

Step 1 – Cut Fabric

Cut lengths of fabric 2.5″ wide. The longer the lengths, the better.

Use your quilting ruler as guide to get the width accurate.

Step 2 – Join Lengths

Join the individual lengths to make one long continuous length of binding fabric.

Place the ends of the lengths of fabric right sides together at right angles. Pin them together.

Press the two pieces flat with the excess fabric pressed in opposite directions, just like pressing a seam open.

Step 3 – Press the Binding

Fold the length of binding in half wrong sides together and give it a good press.

I like to roll my binding around itself to keep it neat until I need it.

A Little Bit About Me . . .

Hey there I’m Bridie, a busy mum to two amazing humans, a spirited border collie puppy and a pair of sweet guinea pigs. We homestead in a cherished Edwardian terrace in not so sunny Lancashire, England.

When I’m not spending time with my children and menagerie, I’m usually to be found in my craft room creating and blogging or in the kitchen cooking up a big batch of something tasty. I’m always looking for thrifty hacks to save money on my crafts and recipes. Crafting doesn’t have to cost a fortune!

I sew with a lot of free patterns, repurposed fabrics and thrifty hacks. I’m always on the look out for deals and ways to cut the cost of sewing.
