My latest knitting project is this Maguire Clan Aran Sweater from the Aran Sweater Market. Knitted in Aldi’s So Crafty Aran yarn, it’s one of my most ambitious knitting projects yet.
Materials
I’m knitting this Maguire Clan Aran in Aldi’s So Crafty Aran yarn in colour Misty Mauve. It’s a lovely dusky purple shade. The yarn knits up nicely enough and it’s super cheap to buy. It does tend to bobble more than I’d like. But after a few months of washing and wearing the bobbling does seem to settle down and stop getting any worse. On the whole, this has become one of my favourite budget yarn brands.

I’m using the 4mm and 5mm knitting needles reamended in the knitting pattern. To make the cables easier to cross I’m using a bent cable needle. If you enjoy knitting cables I highly recommend investing in one.
Knitting Pattern
I tracked this pattern down years and years ago. I wouldn’t normally spend this much money on a kitting pattern but I really liked the idea of knitting a piece of my family’s history and heritage.

I was deep into my Outlander fangirl phase and dreaming of sewing with my family’s tartan. It turns out that the Maguire Clan tartan isn’t to my taste much less my budget! But my google deep dive did present me with this knitting pattern which was far more to my liking and my pocket, so I took the plunge and bought it.

Knitting
This is probably one of my most ambitious knitting projects to date. There’s A LOT of cabling. And A LOT of pattern changes to keep track of. When I first started I drew out a little chart to help me picture which cable pattern I was working on for which part of the row. I also carefully counted my rows so I could kept track of which part of the cable pattern I should be working on.

Once I got the pattern established it was easier to see from my knitting what I should be doing and I needed to look at the pattern far less often. Things did get easier form that point onwards.
Fitting
I’m not as petite as I used to be (thanks motherhood) but I knitted this sweater in the smallest size. It’s quite a stretchy pattern and I wanted a snug fitting jumper. There is a lot of ease in the pattern and even with the smallest size my new sweater is quite baggy.
I’m really pleased with it and it’s lovely and warm, just right for cosy winter nights knitting my next project.
I do hope my Maguire Clan Aran Sweater Knitting Project has inspired you to have a go at knitting your own clan Aran.
