This fish pie recipe is one of the most expensive dishes I make my family but it is oh so worth it!! It makes an absolutely scrumptious fish pie and the best part is the the kids clean their plates every time, like literally lick their plates clean.

How to Cook Fish Pie
I start by peeling and chopping my potatoes. Then I pop them in a pan of water to boil while I prepare the fish.

I used to make this dish with frozen fish which is totally an option, a cheaper option too. If you use frozen fish you need to chop the fish into bite sized pieces whilst it’s still frozen and get it in the freezer as quickly as possible so that the fish stays frozen. It’s not safe to let fish defrost and then re-freeze it without having cooked it first.
I saw these fish pie packs in Aldi and thought I’d give them a go. This fish pie is soooo much nicer with fresh fish. It was also mush easier to prepare as the fish pieces were already cut up for me. I won’t be going back to using frozen fish.
I divide the fish pieces even into my oven dishes.

Then I top them with the frozen peas.

Then I mix up the sauce in a separate jug. Half a tub of crème fresh with a good sized dollop of Dijon mustard. Then I add enough milk to top up to one pint and a little sprinkling of cornflour to thicken the sauce.

I give it a good mix and pour it over half of the fish and peas.
Then I make a second batch of sauce for the other half. It could be made in one go but my measuring jug only fits one pint so two batches it is for me.

It’s totally possible to mash the potatoes by hand and if a potato masher is all you’ve got then don’t let that stop you making this fish pie recipe. But if you do have a stand mixer I highly recommend you mash the potatoes in the machine. Add lots of butter and about 500g of grated cheese. The mashed potatoes come out deliciously soft and creamy.

I spoon the mashed potatoes over my fish pie filling then run a fork over the surface to give them that nice bumpy texture.

For the finishing touch I sprinkle a little grated cheese on top of each pie. The cheese grills perfectly and gives the pie crust an amazing taste and texture.

Fish Pie Serving Suggestions
We like our fish pie with baked beans. But sometimes we have it with frozen vegetables (after they’ve been boiled I mean!). Mushy peas would be a good option too. I have made this pie with cauliflower instead of peas and would do so again but I think the sweetness of the peas is slightly better taste wise.
I do hope that my Fish Pie recipe has inspired you to have a go at making your own batch cook pies.
