My first attempt at Creative Journaling with Craft Sensations papers and Washi Tapes. Along with my meandering thoughts on scrapbooking verses creative journaling, the difference if any and which suits my style the best.
Creative Journaling
I’ve bene playing with a new style of scrapbooking lately.
I love my bullet journal and use it near daily to keep track of all of the things. Whilst I love creative bullet journals I know that this style of bullet journaling wouldn’t work for me. There is just no way I can consistently find the time to set up a regular decorative spread. My bullet journal is definitely more minimal than most and for me that’s exactly why it’s functional and I rely on it being functional.
Having said that I still find myself drooling over YouTube videos and Pinterest Pins of gorgeous decorative bullet journals. I also find myself lovingly fondling washi tape and stalking stationary store’s websites with dreamy eyes. A few of those washi tapes have jumped into my shopping basket – for the kids you understand.
As it’s quite obvious I’m inspired by this more informal style of scrapbooking I thought I’d give the creative journaling trend a try instead of my usual 12×12 scrapbook layout.
Designer Scrapbook Papers
I grabbed a scrapbooking paper pack that appealed to me at the time. It was Craft Sensations Fresh Florals which I picked up at The Range for the bargain price of about £3. I’m really impressed with the quality of these papers for such a low price. These ones are even double sided.

Scrapbook Embellishments
I also used one of those packs of Washi Tapes that found it’s way into my basket whilst I was at the Range. I think I also added some that I totally pinched out of my kids craft stash!! It’s OK, I have a deal with them, they let me use their craft stuff whenever I want and I agree to buy them more to replace it. Win win.
Thoughts on Creative Journaling
I’m not overly sure if this creative journaling style is for me. I’ve done this layout in my normal writing journal but it doesn’t seem to feel right somehow.
I’m thinking it’s because my scrapbook layouts with photos, designer papers, embellishments and most importantly memories are quite formal, the sort of thing I’d be happy to share with anyone who wanted to see them.
But in complete contrast my writing journal is very private, a stream on thoughts not necessarily positive or polite. I don’t censor anything in there, including my handwriting! It’s my personal space to vent and moan knowing that my complaints won’t go any further, a space to vent and get my emotions in check before resolving a problem rationally.
I’m coming to the conclusion that these two very different types of journaling should be done in two separate books, one for recording memories in a positive way and another for private thoughts including the negative ones. So almost like a thoughts journal and a gratitude journal . . . maybe . . . It’s definitely a case of trying different things to see what works for me.
And after all, that’s the whole point of scrapbooking, journaling or what ever else you want to call it in whatever form it takes!
