Love to knit Aran sweaters but don’t know what to do with the leftover yarn? Try knitting these Mariner’s Hats. They’re quick and simple to make and use very little yarn so they’re a fantastic stash busting project. The knitting pattern is completely free and comes in a range of sizes from baby to adult.
Knitting Yarn Choice
I’m using So Crafty Red Aran Yarn from Aldi. It’s a beautiful deep red colour which really caught my eye. It was also a fantastic price, just £4.99 for 400g a ball.
I’ve knitted one of my favourite sweaters, the Maguire Clan Aran. I was a sensible knitter for once and bought too much yarn for my project. So after knitting my jumper I had about 300g of left over yarn. I’m knitting this Mariner’s Hat and a matching pair of fingerless gloves using a free knitting pattern. I even had enough left over to knit this Ribby Cowl for which I’m sharing a free knitting pattern.
You can click on either of the images below for more details, including a link to the free Fingerless Gloves pattern and my Free Ribby Cowl Knitting Pattern.
Knitting Yarn Substitutions
You can substitute just about any Aaron weight yarn. Ideally the gauge should be 14 stitches and 20 rows over a 10cm (or 4″) square. This knitting pattern is very forgiving so as long as it’s roughly the right gauge you’ll be fine.
These are a few of my favourite Aran knitting yarns that would be perfect for knitting this Mariners Hat.
Knitting Needles You’ll Need
For this knitting project I’ve used both circular needles and double pointed knitting needles. I find it easier to knit on the circular needles because I can just mindlessly knit away without worrying about changing needles. But as the hat gets smaller, circular needles are more difficult to use. I can’t seem to get on with the magic loop technique, so I switch to double pointed needles instead.
This is just my preference, I know different knitters have their own favourite ways of knitting in the round.

Free Knitting Pattern
I’ve followed the Mariners Hat Knitting Pattern from Handy Little Me.
It’s a free knitting pattern availible online or you can buy the printable pdf version without ads.
The Mariners Hat Knitting Pattern comes in all sizes from baby to adult. So I think I’ll be knitting my kiddos some of these hats.
I’ve found to to be a fantastic pattern for using up leftover yarn. What better way to put it to use than by making accessories to co-ordinate with the bigger project?

I do hope my Mariners Hat Knitting project has inspired you to have a go at knitting your own hats with your leftover bits of yarn.
