Trip to Southport Beach and Pier

We took a trip to Southport on the west coast and spent the day at Southport Beach.

The tide goes unusually far out leaving these areas of poodles which are shallow enough that I was happy for my kids to paddle in the them without needing particularly close supervision. They do leave the beach very wet and almost muddy. There is a dry area that doesn’t appear to get much sea but it is absolutely covered in millions of shards of shells.

Little Miss cut her finger quite deeply on on of the shards so the kids are reluctant to go back to the beach which is a real shame.

Southport pier proved to be more of a success if you could call it that. It’s a beautiful Victorian pier which is unfortunately in quite a dilapidated state. It’s such a shame because the original architecture is so beautiful. I can imagine it lined with stalls during it’s heyday. Surely this could be recreated? Or maybe people are more interested in going abroad these days and the Great British Seaside holiday has had it’s day.

There’s a train for those too lazy to walk but it’s far too pricey for my taste. I think a return trip for our family of 4 was about £12.

The view from the end of the pier is spectacular and well worth the walk.

But unfortunately the view is the only thing that’s there. There are buildings at the end of the pier, I was expecting a café. But everything was closed and boarded up making it feel very oppressive, even though it was peak season.

It was a nice enough day out while we were in the area but we certainly won’t be making a special trip to come back here.
