Stitch Upon a Time’s Merryweather Top – Easy Sewing Project

I’m sewing up the Marryweather top from Stitch Upon a Time. My Merryweather tops have become a wardrobe staple and my go to pattern for comfortable tops. I love the shape they give me and the fit is perfect. They are super quick and easy to sew.

I’m sharing all the details of the sewing pattern and fabric I’m using as well as tips for sewing your own Marryweather Tops.

Marryweather Sewing Pattern

The pattern is the Merryweather from Stitch Upon a Time.

It’s a super simple jersey top with optional colour blocking which is very useful for putting scraps of fabric to use.

There’s the usual long, short and three quarter sleeve length options. It’s nice to have the versatility. I wear the short sleeve for summer, the long sleeve in autumn and spring. For winter wear I layer two of them together.

Each sleeve option can be finished with a simple hem or with a cuff. I like to use the cuff when I want to use a fun contrasting fabric.

I’m particularly fond of the neckline options. I think a V neckline is the most flattering on my figure. There’s a simple round neck line too. And a turtle neck which I haven’t tried because I don’t find them comfortable to wear.

I almost forgot about the dress option. I’ll have to give that a try at some point, I think it would make a lovely comfortable casual dress.

The Merryweather Sewing Pattern is availible from Stitch Upon a Time through their Etsy shop.

Sewing Fabric

My Little Miss picked out this Little Johnny cotton Lycra fabric. It’s soft and stretchy and has fabulous recovery so it fits like a glove.

Little Johnny Cotton Jersey Stretch Knit Fabric

I do recommend sewing Stitch Upon a Time’s Merryweather in cotton Lycra fabric. It is perfectly possible to sew this top in jersey fabrics without any Lycra content and they are comfortable to wear. However the recovery just isn’t there so they stretch out and look scruffy really quickly.

I get most of my fabric from Minerva Crafts. They have a great selection and very reasonable prices.

Sewing Thread

I use Coats Moon Thread for all of my sewing projects. It’s a fantastic all rounder great for machine sewing, hand sewing, quilting and top stitching. Best of all it’s fantastic value. I use it for literally everything!

Sewing the Neckline

The only vaguely involved part of sewing is the neckband.

I’m sewing the v neck option this time. It is the more complex of the choices, so if you’re new to sewing I’d advise you to stick to the round neck option.

This is one of those techniques that’s beautifully simple IF you follow the instructions correctly! Take the time to line up the tacking stitches on the neckband correctly. And make sure you tack it in place before sewing.

This is not a step to rush, take your time, check twice and sew once.

As always I’ve added a row of top stitching around the neckline with a twin needle. This secures the potentially irritating seam on the inside and leaves a neat finish on the outside of the neckband.

Sleeve and Body Hems

I use a twin needle on my hems. I love the professional looking finish it makes.
