Pork shoulder is one of the cheapest real meats available at the moment so I’ve been adapting some of my favourite recipes is use pulled pork instead of beef mince. This Pulled Pork Pie is topped with cheesy mash potato for a deliciously comforting budget meal. I make and freeze a batch of Pulled Pork Pies for super quick and easy midweek dinners.

How to Make Pulled Pork Pie
Remove the packaging and pop your pork shoulder into a slow cooker. Cook on low for about 8 hours or on high for 5 hours if you’re in a rush.

Peel and chop the potatoes. Pop them in a pan of water to boil.

Mash the potatoes adding butter and grated cheese. I like to use a stand mixer to get really smooth fluffy mashed potatoes.

Dice and fry the onions until soft.

Remove the pork shoulder from the slow cooker and shred it with a pair of forks.

Stir the shredded pork into the fried onions.
Layer freezer proof oven dishes with pork mixture topped with mashed potatoes.
Score the top the mashed potatoes with a fork so that it goes nice and crispy in the oven.

If you are freezing the pies cover them with cling film and let them cool completely before freezing. Defrost them overnight in the fridge.
To cook pop the pie in the oven at gas mark 4 for about 30 – 40 minutes. The top of the mash should be slightly golden with tasty little crispy bits. The pie should be nice and hot throughout.
I do hope that my Pulled Pork Pie recipe has inspired you to have a go at making your own budget pork meals.
