It’s been unusually mild over the last few weeks and the veggies have been enjoying the heat.
Vegetable Garden Beds 1 & 2

I’ve got a little Japanese radish in bed one, along with some beetroot and a lonely spring onion. They’re all still quite small so I’m waiting to see if they fatten up enough to be worth harvesting before winter begins in earnest.
In bed two I’ve got a selection of winter salad leaves. I haven’t harvested much of them because I’ve not been wanting to eat salads since the weather started getting colder.
Vegetable Garden Beds 3 & 4

I’m delighted with my parsnips this year. They’re huge and there’s plenty of them.
Bed four is looking fairly reasonable too. There’s a few broccoli plants, I’ve lost track of the variety but I’m hoping they’re early purple sprouting broccoli. I’ve a couple of cabbages that look like they may be promising in the early spring.
Vegetable Garden Beds 5 & 6

Definitely my most successful winter harvests so far have been the spinach and swiss chard of which I’ve got two varieties.
My leeks on the other hand look pathetic. Are they even worth harvesting?!?
Fruit Patch

The strawberries have been fabulous this summer. My Little Dude has been able to feast on his new favourite snack every day. I has been an absolute joy to see him getting home from nursery each day and excitedly grabbing a bowl to hunt for his lunch of fresh peas and strawberries. These two harvests alone make all the effort worthwhile.
I did trim the strawberry plants after they finished harvesting. But they grew back almost straight away presumably because of the unusually mild weather. There’s even some little green strawberries growing.
My gooseberry and blackcurrant harvests were really disappointing last year. I’ve trying following the usual pruning advice and leaving the pruning until mid winter instead of doing it straight after harvesting like my mother used to swear by.
I have however followed her advice and pruned my lavender hard straight after harvesting the flowers which were also really disappointing this year.
Herb Garden

The sage has been flourishing and I’ve had to prune it several times just to keep the plant in it’s place. My chives have been a joy as always. They started to go yellow and die back so I’ve already cut them back tot he ground. My rosemary needs a prune but I’m keen to learn more about how and when to do it. Same goes for the oregano. My mint and lemon has been flourishing as always.
I’m annoyed that I didn’t harvest and dry my herbs earlier in the year. As the year is drawing to a close the herbs are succumbing to pests and are very much past their best, not great for preserving.
