Annual Goal Planning with a Bullet Journal

Each year I set a myself goals to achieve over the course of the year. I keep this spread right at the front of my Bullet Journal to remind me every day of what I’m trying to achieve in my life.

This Bullet Journal spread is based on Level 10 Life. I wrote a whole other blog post on how I’ve adapted the technique to suit my own needs. Do check it out if you like the idea of Level 10 Life – or if you’ve no idea what I’m talking about!).

Annual Goals

Instead of 10 life goals I’ve split my life into just four categories. I do like to keep things simple!

My Bullet Journal Layout allows space for 5 goals within each category of my life. I feel like that’s a nice number of goals to focus on throughout the year.

Heart Goals

My main goal is to be a good mum.

Whilst it’s a very simple goal I’ve found it very difficult to define exactly what that looks like and how I go about achieving this.

I find SMART goals very effective and after many years I’ve managed to find a way of applying this type of goal setting concept to my role as a parent.

There’s more detail in my recent blog post.

Hearth Goals

Home life is a little simpler to find specific achievable goals. Although I was inspired by my thought process on parenting. So I want to keep my house clean and tidy. I have a picture in my head of what that looks like. But I have kids and of course they like to spread playdoh in all the worst places and Little Dude still hasn’t learnt to put the caps on his pens. I don’t want to spend my life running round after them cleaning up the messes as soon as they’re made. At the same time I don’t want my children to feel like they can’t make those messes, those messes are where memories are made and cleaning them up is where responsibility is learned.

So instead of focusing on the results I’ve set myself up a simple list of weekly cleaning tasks. So my goals are to clean the bathroom each week, vacuum the stairs weekly etc etc. As long as that job is done I consider my goal achieved.

I also have a goal to deep clean each room once a month. I currently achieve this more like once a quarter but that’s OK, my kids are small and life is busy. Spending time with them is more important than having an immaculate house.

I aim to spend 12 days in my garden each year. I have little weekly jobs to keep on top of weeding and watering but once a month it helps to give it a good going over.

Finances belong in this category too. My financial goals are simply unachievable at the moment. So I just aim to save as much as I can. Thriftiness is pretty much second nature to me now so I’ve not really bothered to set a specific goal.

Body Goals

I know lots of people set weight loss goals. That’s not really for me. Weight is just a number that doesn’t really mean anything. It’s not a good measure of health.

Getting 5 portions of fruit and veg a day is a nice specific goal that’s achievable for me – when I actually focus on it!! This goal stays on my spread every year and I go through phases of making an effort to meet it.

It’s the same for drinking 8 cups of water a day. I can totally do it when I put my mind to it, there’s just so many more interesting things for me to put my mind to!

Dieting doesn’t really fit into my life at the moment. I keep trying to maintain a calorie deficit but it’s so time consuming to track what I eat that I end up giving up. It’s not sticking to healthy eating plan that is my problem, just the time to monitor what I eat, there is always something more important demanding my attention (by which I mean my children of course).

So I tend to use a calories burned goal. My Fitbit tracks my calories burnt without any input from me. I also set my goal on a monthly basis instead of daily. So it’s OK if I have an off day or a lazy day, I just need to make up my activity another time.

I aim to try a new recipe each week. The vast majority of cook from scratch recipes are healthy, or at least low in processed foods. So this is a good way of ensuring that my family’s diet is reasonably healthy without much stress on my part.

I rediscovered my love of reading a few years ago. I aim to read one book a month, twelve in the year. It’s an easy goal to achieve thanks to audio books.

Soul Goals

I always want to craft ALL THE THINGS!!!

A few years ago I joined a Facebook group – 52 Week Sewing Challenge. The idea is that you complete one sewing project each week. It was a great motivator to plough through my pile of UFOs (Unfinished Objects) and I got so much sewing done. I’ve got out of my grove this last year but I’m really excited to get back to it next year.

The idea has also inspired me to aim to do one project in each main craft each week. So I’m aiming for one card making project each week and one scrapbook page too. Knitting projects aren’t generally achievable at a rate of one a week so I’ve set myself a target of one knitting project completed each month.

The main purpose of this blog is to record and make myself accountable for achieving these goals. I love being able to look back and see how many project’s I’ve completed, all the recipes I’ve tried and all the fun things I’ve done with my children.

So there they are, my 2022 Goals in black and white. Hopefully I will get closer to achieving them than I did last year. We all get to write off the last two years right? 2022 can’t be any worse surely? I said that last year . . .

Yeah, so, if you want more doomsday predictions follow me on a social media channel of your choosing.

Good luck with your goals! I like that you still set them even though like me you don’t always achieve them all. But I think just mindfully working on them is a goal reached either way. Happy New Year! #HomeMattersParty
