This week we took a walk around our local greenway in what turned out to be the first snowfall of the year.

We’re very lucky to live in a beautiful part of the country. Just a short walk from my house is an ancient wooded area, a canal and the greenway which is area that has been left undeveloped. It’s criss-crossed with public footpaths. Most of the paths have been surfaced with tarmac so they are perfect for winter walks and prams.

After a short walk along the very busy roads leading to the motorway we are able to access the canal and greenway. The greenway footpaths link all of the surrounding suburbs, including the children’s school and local towns. On this day we walked along them to a local suburb where a new play centre has opened up.

As we set off from home the snow started falling. Thankfully I had already checked my route on Google satellite view and was quite confident that the paths were surfaced. We did of course take the precaution of wearing wellies and sturdy boots.

It was stunningly beautiful walking through the woods as familiar fields were slowly covered in white snow. The children had an amazing time running and playing in the snow.

Little Dude is too young to remember previous year’s snow falls so he was a little perplexed at first. “There’s snow on my eyelashes” he said. His sister then gave him very detailed instructions on how to deal with this problem, while I listened in chuckling to myself.

After a few hours in the soft play café (which was delightful) we headed for home. The snow had stopped falling and had settled on the ground. The children had the obligatory snowball fight with much whooping and squealing.

I try to take my children out somewhere once a week. I find that if we spend time together in the house I’m distracted by the housework and the children want some form of electronic entertainment. If we get out of the house and go somewhere, anywhere, I feel free to give my children 100% of my focus and they don’t expect to have any gadgets.

I also find it really helpful to have some sort of loose structure to our day. For example a walk like we did this week. Sometimes we go to an event or a town we haven’t visited before. Even just a visit to a local park is enough.

It’s not about spending any money on the children, we usually pack a picnic in better weather, so the cost is kept to a minimum. It’s just about spending time together having fun and making memories.

I love how good it feels watching them enjoying themselves.
