I use a technique similar to Level 10 Life but with some significant customisations that help me adapt Level 10 Life so that it works for me.

Level 10 Life

Level 10 Life is an idea featured in Hal Elrod’s book My Miracle Morning. I’ve not read the book myself, just seen the idea around the interweb. It’s an excellent concept that I’ll leave you to google for yourself.

Basically the idea is that you rate your satisfaction from 1-10 with 10 different areas of your life.

The different areas are as follows:

  • Health and Fitness
  • Physical Environment
  • Giving and/or Contributions
  • Fun and Recreation
  • Marriage or Relationship
  • Career
  • Finances
  • Spiritual
  • Personal Development
  • Family and Friends

By creating a visual representation of your success in each of these areas you can clearly see which areas need more of your focus. This can then help you to set clear goals to help you achieve “Level 10 Life” i.e. achieving 10 out of 10 satisfaction with all 10 areas of your life.

I call BS on that.

The concept assumes that no area of your life is occupying a disproportionate amount of your time and energy – hello parenting. It also assumes that you have to option to control the areas you choose to focus on. And then of course there’s the fact that some of the areas are completely irrelevant for some people, not everyone has a career for example.

In short achieving “Level 10 Life” is just simply not realistic for the vast majority of “normal” people. By which I mean people with significant responsibilities and limited resources, so the vast majority of people.

I think this inevitable “failure” results in a lot of people disregarding Level 10 Life as a concept. Either that or starting it and feeling bad that they can’t achieve “Level 10 Life”.

My Take on Level 10 Life

Having said that I do love the concept of taking the time to assess how satisfied you are with your own life. And using that to figure out what you can do to improve your level of satisfaction.

I think it’s also very helpful to divide “LIFE” into different categories. No one can focus on everything all at once. By assigning categories we can focus on one area of life at a time and rotate that focus according to our needs and resources.

So for my life I’ve ignored most of the categories suggested for Level 10 Life. These are areas that are out of my control or things that simply aren’t important to me.

I just have four simple sections of my life.

  • Heart – Family and Friends / Marriage or Relationship / Career
  • Hearth – Physical Environment / Giving and/or Contributions / Finances
  • Body – Health and Fitness / Personal Development
  • Soul – Fun and Recreation / Spiritual

Heart

Heart which is basically parenting, being the best mum I can be.

Hearth

Hearth i.e. home so that’s housework and gardening but also those little extras that turn a house into a home. Like making sure we do our bit for charity and sticking to a budget.

Body

Body, my health and fitness. But not just in terms of physical diet and exercise, it’s also about learning and self care which I guess is what Level 10 Life means by personal development.

Soul

And last but not least Soul. I’m not sure how to define this area of my life in any other way. It’s the something else, the essential element that makes a person happy. I could be a perfect mum, keep my dream home and be the picture of health but that’s worth nothing without a passion that makes my heart sing. For me that’s crafting.

Adapting Level 10 Life

Without feeling the need to constrain myself to comply with the categories assigned by Level 10 Life I’ve been able to divide (and hopefully conquer) my life into much more manageable sections that make sense for me.

I strongly encourage you to consider techniques like Level 10 Life when they catch your attention. They might not suit you in the same way that other people use them but no one said you had to be like everyone else, in fact I think life would be very miserable if we were all the same. You are a unique individual so the solutions to managing your life should be just as unique.

I really hope I’ve inspired you to look into Level 10 Life and see how you can adapt it to suit your own life.
